Urban Health Plan provides comprehensive, affordable primary and specialty health care services to several boroughs in New York City. The organization supports these communities with 12 health centers, a mental health facility, a workforce development program, school health programs and more.

Nearly 80% of UHP’s patients speak Spanish or are of Hispanic descent. Most of UHP’s doctors and team members are also Spanish speakers.

Despite this robust representation, UHP did not operate a Spanish website. That had to change, its leaders knew. In 2020, UHP began looking for a translation solution that could meet its unique requirements … and help reinforce the organization’s enduring commitment to its communities.

The Challenge

UHP leadership identified several goals for the project:

  • Provide Spanish-speaking patients with a seamless online UX that could serve as a go-to community resource for health information and to learn about UHP services
  • Deliver an experience that conveyed the same authentic, empathetic tone represented throughout UHP’s English website
  • Avoid burdening the company’s lean IT resources with countless ongoing tasks

While the company’s English-only online experience wasn’t necessarily harming its brand, UHP is steadfastly committed to creating an inviting, caring environment for its patients, says Robin West, UHP’s Senior Director of Communications.

The greatest problem to for UHP to solve, West says, was how to affordably launch and operate a Spanish website with no ongoing IT or Marketing effort required
